Ayatollah Khatami urges strong punishment of riot leaders

ayatollah ahmad khatami

Tehran, June 26, – Substitute Friday prayers leader of Tehran Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami here on Friday called for severe punishment of the leaders of recent street riots in Iran.

“Leaders of recent street riots are supported by the US and Israel; we call on the judiciary to categorically deal with the people so that it will serve as an eye-opener for others,” said Ayatollah Khatami in his second Friday prayers sermon to large groups of worshipers in Tehran University campus.

Ayatollah Khatami said that on the same basis, the rioters and leaders of the riots should know that any debate on annulment of the elections and questioning elections in principle will be unjust and Iranian nation will not surrender to the pressure.

“From the standpoint of jurisprudence, that’s `Moharebeh’ (a major crime committed against Islam and Islamic state); and anybody lodging gun battle against people is `Mohareb’ and Islam envisions toughest punishment for the person,” said Ayatollah Khatami, while referring to recent street unrest, sabotage, firing of mosques and buses, destruction of public facilities and subsequent insecurity, social panic and public harassment.

He then thanked police and security forces, especially Basijis, for their relentless efforts to quell the unrest and guarantee national security, wishing speedy recovery for the injured.

He invited both the winner and defeated candidates to stick to morals, observe patience and show logical behaviors.
