Oversleeping Lowers Risk of Heart Attack
A Swedish study suggested that additional sleep after moving clocks backward in fall lowers the risk of developing cardiovascular events.
According to the study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the risk increases by 5 percent after the start of daylight saving time.
Findings revealed more heart attacks particularly on the first three days of the spring forward week, indicating that lack of sleep and anxiety from change in ones routine are the main causes leading to the condition.
The study found that altered blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels as well as inflammation and blood clotting are the main reasons by which sleep can affect the heart’s health.
Previous studies had reported a higher heart attack rate on Mondays mainly due to inadequate weekend sleep. The stress of a new workweek and increased activity were considered as the main factors contributing to the condition.
Scientists concluded that sleep not only influences ones mood but also affects cardiovascular health.
