yemenis want air force chief dismissed

Yemeni soldiers have staged a sit-in outside the residence of the vice president to demand the ouster of the air force commander, the half-brother of the country's dictator Ali Abdullah Saleh.

According to IRIB, hundreds of soldiers and officers from Sana'a's Al-Dailami air base gathered outside the residence of Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, who is set to replace Saleh as president, on Monday calling for the dismissal of General Muhammad Saleh al-Ahmar.

They have threatened to set up tents across the area if their demands for Ahmar's ouster are not met.

According to Yemeni military sources, protests demanding the dismissal of Ahmar started over the weekend and are now spreading across the country.

Similar protests demanding Ahmar's removal were also reported at bases in Taizz, Hodeida and Lahj. The protests came one day after Saleh, who has been in power for 33 years, left Yemen for the US. Saleh has vowed to return to the country as head of the ruling General People's Congress party.
