Bahrain probes protester’s death
The Bahraini regime says it is investigating the killing of a protester during a recent anti-regime rally, as demonstrations continue across the country.
The Al Khalifa regime of Bahrain said Tuesday it was probing some police officers for “exceeding their authority” after a 60 year-old man from Sitra died following two weeks in hospital from inhalation of tear gas this week, Reuters reported.
"An officer and a number of general security personnel at Budaya police station have been transferred for questioning for going beyond the authority granted them by the law," a statement released by the Interior Ministry said.
Nabeel Rajab, head of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights, has said that the Bahraini citizen Isa al-Taweel died on Sunday from the effects of tear gas fired by security forces when he was inside his home.
The government-sponsored probe comes as protest rallies against the Saudi-backed regime of Al Khalifa continue across the tiny Persian Gulf sheikdom.
Earlier on Tuesday, anti-government protesters flooded the streets in the town of Sitra, and several villages including Diraz, Abu Saiba and Dair, demanding an end to the Al Khalifa rule and calling for the release of all political prisoners.
Scores of people have been killed and many more arrested and tortured in prisons in a government-sanctioned crackdown on peaceful protests since the beginning of the revolution back in February.
In mid-March, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates deployed military forces in Bahrain to assist the government in its brutal crackdown on popular demonstrations.
Bahraini rights groups accuse the Al Khalifa regime of systematically torturing people who are opposed to its rule.
