Eating fiber lowers breast cancer risk

Women who consume more fiber are less likely to develop breast cancer than those eating lower amounts of healthy plant components.

A team of Chinese researches reviewed the records of 712,195 women and then followed them for more than 7 to 18 years. About 2.4 percent of the participants developed breast cancer during the observation period.

The data analysis revealed that women who used the most fiber (top fifth) were 11 percent less likely to develop breast cancer. Moreover, for every 10 grams of total dietary fiber intake per day, the risk of breast cancer dropped by 7 percent, said the report published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

The blood estrogen levels were reported to be lower in individuals who followed a high-fiber diet, wrote Jia-Yi Dong, Ka He, Peiyu Wang, and Li-Qiang Qin from the Soochow University.

"Increasing dietary fiber intake in the general public is of great public health significance," the Chinese scientists concluded.

Previous studies have also found several health benefits for high-fiber diet such as lowered cholesterol levels, weight loss and reduced risk of developing heart disease and cancers, especially large intestine malignancies.

According to the 2010 Dietary Guidelines of the US Department of Agriculture, women should eat 25 grams of fiber each day; the recommended amount is as high as 38 grams in men.
