A group of Iranian puppeteers led by Zahra Sabri is scheduled to perform “The Earth and the Universe” during the 11th Kovcheg Puppet Festival, which will be held in Kirov, central Russia, from April 18 to 24.

The story presented by the puppetry is an adaptation of seven stories from the Iranian poet and mystic Molana Jalal ad-Din Rumi’s magnum opus the Masnavi.

Sabri had originally submitted “Count to One” to the festival, but replaced it with “The Earth and the Universe” after “Count to One” puppeteers were unable to get visas to Russia.

Puppeteers Roxana Bahram, Fatemeh Abbasi and Mona Sarbandi and assistant director Zohreh Baratlu will accompany Sabri during the event, director Sabri said in a press release on Saturday.

Over 10 puppet plays from Russia, Japan, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, and Bosnia-Herzegovina are slated to be staged during the festival, which focuses on traditional stories.

“The Earth and the Universe” has previously been performed at festivals in Armenian, Spain, Lebanon and several other countries.
