The United Arab Emirates is scheduled to mount an exhibition of paintings by award-winning Iranian artist Behrang Samadzadegan in the city of Dubai.

Love in the Time of Unrest will display works which in the artist’s own words depict a world “filled with a mixture of feelings; gloom hidden behind a decorated curtain and smiles that become an image for propaganda and suggest joy and light.”

“When gloom reappears from behind the curtain and shows itself beyond the Janus face of our society, we escape to humor and coquetry to make reality endurable,” Samadzadegan says in his note on the exhibition.

“So, we alter reality to make it tolerable. Reality changes color in our hands.”

Born in 1979, Samadzadegan graduated in painting from Tehran’s University of Fine Arts in 2001 and continued his studies in Tehran’s Tarbiat Modares University.

He has held five solo exhibitions since 2002 including Requiems and Everything is just fine! both in Tehran art galleries.

His works have also been showcased in international group shows in Turkey, Armenia, Chicago, Greece, Egypt, Venice, New York, and Paris.

Samadzadegan won the 2008 Golden Feather award of the first International Media Art Festival (IMAFY) in Cairo, and his works were then displayed in The Promise of Loss: A Contemporary Index of Iran and Iran Inside Out held at New York’s Arario Gallery and the Chelsea Art Museum respectively.

The Iranian artist is also a member of the Association of Iranian Painters (AIP).

Love in the Time of Unrest will be held at Dubai’s XVA Gallery from April 12 to May 14, 2011.
