Depicting the portrait of Hazrat Abbas (AS), brother of Imam Hussein (AS), on TV is not forbidden based on shariah, replies Ayatollah Seyyed Ezzeddin Hosseini Zanjani.

Following an istifta, a request by someone for a fatwa, a ruling based on shariah, Ayatollah Hosseini Zanjani stated that showing the individual playing the role of Hazrat Abbas (AS) on “Mokhtarnameh” TV series is not a problem according to shariah, the Persian service of Fars reported on Saturday.

The name of the person or persons who submitted the istifta was not released to the news.

Following is the text of the istifta:

“Davud Mirbaqeri’s TV series “Mokhtarnameh” plans to show the image of the actor who plays the role of Hazrat Abbas (AS). We are thinking of opposing this, and if we do, would we be doing the right thing? Please inform us of your opinion.”

The reply follows:

“Showcasing the image of Hazrat Abbas (AS) is not forbidden based on shariah, but the individual selected to play the role should have a good reputation among people and a background devoid of any negative attributes, and would also have to be careful in selecting his future roles. Of course, depicting the noble character of Hazrat Abbas (AS) is impossible in any film or other art form, but they should try to present an image as close as possible to the real portrait of Hazrat Abbas (AS). On the whole, it is a difficult task and requires careful, in-depth consideration,” replies Ayatollah Hosseini Zanjani.

“Mokhtarnameh”, which includes 26 episodes and is produced by Sima Films, is the sixth TV series by Davud Mirbaqeri. Kaveh Fotuhi is playing the role of Hazrat Abbas (AS) in the series.

The series depicts the life of Mokhtar Saqafi, leader of the main uprising that formed after the events of Ashura, the 10th of Muharram, the day Imam Hussein (AS) was martyred.

The story begins at the time of the Imamate of Imam Hassan (AS), reviews the events leading to the martyrdom of the Imam and ends with the adolescence of Mokhtar.

The second episode reviews 16 years of Mokhtar’s life and includes the death of Mu’awiyah, the succession of Yazid ibn-Mu’awiyah, and the events leading to Ashura and those related to Mokhtar’s uprising until his martyrdom and that of his companions.
