Border guards go on military exercises in southeast Iran
A legion of border guards began a series of military exercises codenamed “Redoubled Effort” across the border region of Mirjaveh near the city of Zahedan in the southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchestan on Saturday.
“Border guards of the southeastern provinces have taken part in the exercises, and advanced weapon systems and military equipment will be used in the maneuvers,” Ahmad Garavand, the deputy police chief in charge of border areas, told reporters on Saturday morning.
The military exercises will run until Monday over a 1500-kilometer-long stretch of border area, he said.
Advanced radars, reconnaissance UAVs, night vision and heat vision cameras and stun guns will be tested during the maneuvers, he stated.
Garavand also explained about the measures taken to maintain the security of border areas.
Garavand said most of the border outposts have been equipped with special radars and the borderlines are currently monitored by radars.
“Our border guards have complete control over border areas and monitor the slightest movements,” he explained.
“In order to control and block the borderlines, physical barriers including canals, bulwarks, concrete walls, and barbed wire fences have been built along the country’s eastern borders,” he added.
Brigadier Yaaqub Rezazadeh, the border police commander for operations, said the military exercises are intended to improve the security of the border areas.
Drug and human trafficking, fuel smuggling, and security issues are the main problems facing the eastern border areas, so the border police decided to carry out maneuvers in these areas, he added.
