Fatty meals provoke asthma attacks
Asthmatic patients should avoid high-fat meals as adopting such diets may inflame their airways, placing them at an increased risk of developing asthma attacks.
According to a study presented at the American Thoracic Society's International Conference in New Orleans, asthmatics who eat high-fat meals experience increased inflammation in their airways.
The consumption of such meals leads to the aggregation of neutrophils, the first white blood cell to arrive at an infection site, in the airways. A marked increase in the activity of a cell surface receptor called TLR4, leading to the release of inflammatory mediators is frequently reported in these individuals.
These individuals also present an impaired response to asthma medication, a condition that per se contributes to the alter lung function following the use of asthma inhaler medication in such patients.
"We also are investigating whether drugs that modify fat metabolism could suppress the negative effects of a high-fat meal in the airways," said lead researcher Lisa Woods.
