Yoga improves sleep in cancer survivors

Yoga can help cancer survivors not only to sleep better but also to have more energy during the day time, a new study finds.

"Physicians and oncologists are often uncomfortable advising patients who want to use therapies that are complementary to standard cancer therapy," said the president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology Douglas Blayney.

He added that the use of sleeping pills is accompanied with various side effects particularly in cancer patients.

According to a study that will be presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology in early June, gentle Hatha yoga and restorative yoga — consisting of special postures, breathing and mindfulness exercises — lowers the need for taking sleeping pills in cancer survivors.

These exercises are also effective in improving the quality of sleep in these individuals, the study found.

Doing yoga also halved the fatigue risk, resulting in a small increase in quality of life.

"It may be promoting social bonding," said lead researcher Karen Mustian, stressing that yoga acts through lowering the stress hormones in these individuals.

"What we conclude based on a really thorough review of [yoga programs] is that it is absolutely safe for cancer survivors during and post treatment to be physically active, and indeed there are tremendous benefits to doing so," concluded Kathryn Schmitz of the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Medicine.
