Lithium in Tap Water lowers Suicide Rate

glass of water
Drinking water containing considerable amounts of an element known as lithium can help reduce the rate of suicide, a Japanese study finds.

High doses of lithium have long been used to stabilize the mood and treat individuals suffering from bipolar disorders; the study published in the British Journal of Psychiatry, found that high levels of lithium in drinking water considerably lowers the rate of suicide.

The study reported that lithium levels ranging between 0.7 to 59 micrograms per liter can lower the rate of suicide and that even relatively low levels of the element can positively impact the rate.

Drinking low levels of lithium over the years is believed to have protective effects on the brain.

Scientists concluded that lithium should be added to drinking water with caution as high doses of the element may cause tremors, drowsiness, renal toxicity, hypothyroidism, dermatitis, and even seizures.
