Saliva to replace fingerprinting?
The overall saliva microbiome varies considerably between individuals regardless of the geographic region one lives in, a study finds.
The mouth is a major entrance for bacteria and therefore contains a diverse array of microbial species reported to be different in different people.
According to the study published in Genome Research, there is a substantial variation in the bacteria living in an individual’s mouth around the world regardless of the large diversity in their diet, hygienic levels and other cultural factors.
The saliva microbiome of a person’s neighbor is just as different as that of someone living on the other side of the world, indicating that there are no geographical patterns.
Scientists are optimistic that their findings will help them gather more information about human migrations and population and better understand certain health conditions.
