Osh State University
http://freenet.bishkek.su/institut/osh/index.html Osh State University (OSU) was established in 1992 upon the reputation and foundation of Osh Pedagogical Institute, which was organized in 1951. From 1951 to 1992 the Institute was responsible for educating over 25,000 teachers in a wide range of academic specialties, including 2000 teachers of English.
In the 1994-95 academic year, OSU had 6,642 graduate and undergraduate students enrolled. The student body of OSU includes Kyrgyz, Uzbeks, Russians, Tadjiks, Tartars, Turks, Ukrainians and students of many other nationalities and ethnic groups studying together. At present, there are also a number of OSU students studying at overseas institutions, including some in theUnited States.
The city ofOsh provides a unique setting for the urban campus of OSU. At the heart of this picturesque city lie the OSU administrative services and humanities departments, with the remaining departments located throughout the city.
OSU is the leading educational, cultural and scientific center of southernKyrgyzstan. The faculties of the University prepare specialists to respond to all the region's needs. The University sows the seeds of science and democracy that will bloom throughout the country.
Programs of Study
At present the University has nine faculties:

The nine faculties are sub-divided into 48 departments, in which over 650 faculty members teach. Moreover, there are a number of independent centers housed in OSU, including:

University Leadership
Bakyt Beshimov has served as the University's Rector since 1992. His academic training is in History fromKyrgyz National University in Bishkek. Rector Beshimov has published widely in the fields of History and Political Science.
Under the leadership of Rector Beshimov the University has expanded its mission in a number of areas, including the forging of ties with foreign universities. One project which has served to fulfill this institutional mission is the cooperative project funded by the United States Information Agency (USIA) betweenPortland State University and OSU for the development of theRegionalBusinessCenter. OSU has strong ties and various exchange projects withAnkara University (Turkey), as well. Additionally, OSU maintains close scientific and professional links with universities in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kiev, Ekaterinburg, Minsk and Tartu.
The direction that Rector Beshimov has led OSU is to provide students with increasingly higher standards of education that will ultimately help the region prosper and facilitateKyrgyzstan's transition into the 21st Century. The University is constantly seeking new opportunities for cooperation with educational institutions worldwide.
The City of Osh
The city ofOsh is the administrative center of the Osh Oblast'. It is located in the southern part of Kyrgyzstan at the head of the Ferghana Valley, about 600 miles south of Bishkek. If you were to draw a line directly west from Beijing and directly north from Bombay the two lines would intersect very near the city ofOsh. The current population ofOsh is approximately 300,00, but it is a modern city with an ancient past. Its history goes back at least 3,000 years, during which time it played a significant role in many empires, and it was an important point in the famed Great Silk Road, which connected East and West for over a millennium.
