Shiraz University in the former regime.
The High Institute of Health developed into Medical Faculty in 1950. In 1954, Namazi Higher Institute for Nursing and in 1970the Faculty of Dentistry was added to medical sciences atShiraz University.
In 1986 education of medical sciences was taken over by the Ministry of Health, Treatment and Medical Education. This was to make use of the medical resources in the country more desirably and also to promote health, treatment, teaching and research more directly. With its new name (Shiraz University of Medical Sciences) the university commenced its activities in 1986.
In 1994 with the inclusion of regional organizations for Health and Treatment in theUniversity ofMedical Sciences, this university was named the University of Medical Sciences and Health Services, Fars Province.
Presently, Shiraz University of Medical Sciences and Health Services is one of the largest and most reliable universities inIran and Middle East. A summary of the university's activities in education, research and health services is presented in this pamphlet.
HistoryThe Foundation of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences dates back to 50 years ago when Shiraz Institute of Higher Health Education admitted a few medical students. For years, as a major faculty ofShiraz University, it continued its educational activities. In 1986, it was separated from Shiraz University and started its activities independently, first, as Shiraz University of Medical Sciences and then as The University of Medical Sciences and Health Services, Fars Province.
At present, with more than 5000 students, 83 different majors, and 460 academic staff and 12000 personnel, it not only offers educational services but also provides required health services for the whole country in general and forFarsProvince in particular.
The university is committed to excellence in research, treatment and teaching. The performance of sophisticated and advanced services such as bone marrow, heart and kidney transplantation proves the high standards in the university.
Presented here is a general overview of the university and its faculties. You will find ample indication of this commitment in these pages as well as through your inquiries and contact with the staff and in the experience of studying and working here.
The first group of medical student was graduated from Shiraz University of Medical Sciences in Oct. 1948 with degree of M.D. The Alumni Society of Shiraz Medical Faculty established by the end of decade (1944-1954) by a selected group of 9 periods of graduates.
This society was no active till 1980, since then, every year in the last day of the International Congress of Geographic Medicine, the present graduates of different age and periods have a ceremonial meeting during which reports, speech traditional, orchestra and memorial gift is presented to the members of society.
Objectives and Major Functions of the Universitya. Training talents through scientific education and research, and expansion of medical and paramedical sciences in order to supply the specialist staff required in the country
b. Setting research and educational facilities to recognize potentialities and enhance the scientific capacity in relation to health and treatment issues.
c. Expanding health and treatment facilities throughout the society through affiliated health and treatment organizations and centers.

History:
The Medical school library inaugurated in the school of medicine in 1949. The first librarian was called Ms Juliet khachatoorian. Its study room could accommodate 100 students
The library included 1400 books and Journals written in English, French and Farsi. The library moved to the present six storeys building in 1980 and was renamed as Shahid Garakani Nejad Library. This library is 2650 square meters large, rendering services in 6 sections

Circulation Desk:
The personnel of the circulation desk are in charge of lending books to clients, presenting library's membership card or ID card based on the regulations. The library contains 40000 Latin and Persian books, 95% of which being in English. Dictionaries and reference books must be used on site.

Retrospective journals from letter A- J. Par are collected in the 6th floor and letters J. Pat- Z in the fifth floor. This unit is one of the richest periodicals sections among the country's medical school libraries. These journals can be used only through photocopies made from the journals.
Dissertations:
Students and residents' theses are collected in the 5th floor to be used on site. There are about 6000 theses which can be searched through the library's computer program
