The Baqais (Dr.Farid and Dr.Zahida) both medical practitioners and surgeons by profession, after completing their medical education in Pakistan and Great Britain, started practicing the art of healing in an underdeveloped country and in a fast growing city of Karachi, the then capital of Pakistan. The enormity and complexity of health care problems and the paucity of proper infrastructures for health care delivery systems motivated them to develop a comprehensive concept of community development on the basis of self reliance and without depending upon the public sector financing. The concept started unfolding itself in concrete actions when the Baqai Foundation acquired a large piece of land onSuper Highway just at the outskirts ofKarachi and established the first ever rural Medical Centre supported by secondary and tertiary health care facilities in 1976. Within a short while, the realization grew that a more imaginative and massive programme of community development is required to address to the needs of the society. Medical Education had to be restructured around the concept of community development and ancillary institutions to be developed for a comprehensive solution of problems. The History of Baqai Medical University is a unique example of Private Enterprise and the visionary spirit in health delivery and medical education. Most of the medial colleges inPakistan have been set up by the provincial government or by the Federal Government.
In the late 60s Dr. F.U.Baqai and Dr. Zahida Baqai started a Hospital Complex in private Sector in the thickly populated area of Nazimabad in Karachi, which developed into a 350-bedded general hospital with modern sophisticated treatment for the middle-in-come group of private patients. A part of the work was also done on Charity Basis. This proved to be a successful venture and Baqai Hospital Nazimabad became a Center Excellence and first of its kind in Pakistan. In 1976 the Baqais founded Baqai Medical Complex on the Super Highway and opened a Rural Health Center. This served the needs of the population of this area and stimulated Dr. and Mrs. Baqai to plan aMedical College. Similar thoughts were conceived in some other countries like Australia and Egypt. The medical need's of the rural population of Pakistan was never seriously tackled by the health planners of the country, even the private sector flourished in urban areas. With great difficulty Baqais were able to convince the government that the Health Delivery System is possible through a Program of Community Oriented Medical Education, which will be of immense benefit to the suffering millions in the villages of Pakistan. This great venture was given a concrete shape in the early 80s and the basic construction of the building of theMedical College was started. It took a few years to collect the required number of initial staff and teachers and the whole curriculum was obtained. The College was started in 1988 and the first batch of MBBS students was admitted: In 1990 the Pakistan Medical & Dental Council permitted the College to start Clinical Teaching at Baqai Hospital, Nazimabad. This was a novel experiment in the Private Sector. In 1992 Baqai Foundation established theBaqai Dental College. This College was the first dental college for the city of Karachi with a population of over 10 millions. It was at that time a growing need for the population of over 10 millions. It was at that time a growing need for population as well as willingness of students, who wanted to take their career in Dental Surgery. Specialized department of Dental Materials was established and the urgent requirements of dental chairs, sophisticated equipment needed for running a Dental College was procured in the coming few years. The medical college and the dental college were regularly scrutinized and in inspected by the inspection Teams of P.M.D.C. The fist batch of medical students and the first batch of dental students completed their education and were granted their degrees by theUniversity of Karachi. PAKISTAN MEDICAL & DENTAL COUNCIL granted recognition of MBBS DEGREE AND BDS DEGREE and it was a source of great satisfaction for the students, teachers and the parents.

MISSION

1) To provide quality education comparable to international standards to its students so that they can acquire the state of art knowledge of subjects for which they otherwise would have to go abroad to internationally known seats of learning.
2) To provide educational programmes in accordance with the actual needs of the society both inPakistan and in the neighboring world.
3) To develop a wholesome and broad based personality of its students inculcating in them a sense of moral and social responsibility.
To achieve the above objectives:

- The admission toBaqai Medical University are controlled strictly, Merit is the only criterion for admission. Entrance tests, interviews and scholastic records are important constituents of determining the merit of a student.
-Baqai Medical University ensures a highly qualified faculty keeping in view the international academic standards. The university has a permanent continuing education programme through its Centre for Medical Education. University as an incentive also provides subsidies and scholarships for the teaching faculty as an encouragement to go abroad for higher education, professional seminars and conferences. An intensive evaluation programme constantly provides a criterion for the faculty to prove its worth.
