Iran lauds Tunisia’s democratic elections
Iran’s Majlis (parliament) Speaker Ali Larijani lauds the first free elections in Tunisia since the fall of long-time dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.
The formation of the new Constituent Assembly was a ”prudent and democratic” measure, said Larijani in an interview with Iran’s Arabic-language news channel Al-Alam on Sunday.
He added that elections in Tunisia can be regarded as an important step for other countries, IRIB reported.
Arab countries should have no fear of carrying out such measures (elections) which will present them with a good model to implement reforms, the top Iranian parliamentarian stated.
He expressed confidence that democracy will strengthen the national strength of Arab countries.
On Sunday, more than 90% of registered Tunisians voters cast their ballots in the country’s first free election since it achieved independence from France in 1956.
Tunisians voted to select the members of an assembly that will appoint a new interim government as well as draft a new constitution.
Tunisia’s elections came after a popular uprising in January overthrew former President Ben Ali and triggered a wave of revolutions across the region.
