Ginger may reduce colon inflammation

Regular consumption of ginger root or its supplements may reduce inflammation in the intestine known to be a precursor of colon cancer.

Researchers at the University of Michigan Medical Center say ginger not only makes your food tasty, but may help your gut as well.

For the study, 30 volunteers were randomly assigned to take supplements containing 2 grams of ground ginger root extract or a placebo every day for almost a month. The levels of inflammation in their intestines were measured before and after the trial.

The amount of ginger extract in the pills was equivalent to 20 grams of raw ginger root, probably beyond what most people would eat in their regular diet, said the researchers.

The findings disclosed that people who took ginger supplements experienced a 28 percent decrease in colon inflammation compared to those who only took dummy pills, says the report published in the journal Cancer Prevention Research.

An earlier animal trail had suggested that ginger could reduce inflammation. Unlike aspirin, however, it might not cause adverse effects, such as a higher risk of stomach bleeding.

”Interest in this is only going to increase as people look for ways to prevent cancer that are nontoxic and improve their quality of life in a cost-effective way,”‌ said the study’s senior author, Suzanna Zick.

Now the new study puts more weight behind traditional advice about ginger, but warns the findings are still preliminary, so view them only as a recommendation.

”If you want to embrace ginger because you like the taste, go ahead, but there’s no solid evidence that it prevents colon cancer,”‌ Zick added. ”It’s much too early to tell whether ginger has anti-cancer properties.”‌
