Jalili: Region wary of Western claims
The Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Saeed Jalili says the peoples of the region are distrustful of the US and Western powers' claims of advocacy of democracy.
“The peoples of the region do not believe the claims of seeking democracy made by international supporters of dictators,” Jalili said on Tuesday, IRNA reported.
“The United States and some Western powers are among the main [parties] accused of stabilizing and sustaining dictators in the world,” he said.
The official noted that “the claims of seeking democracy by these powers do not obviate their responsibility for [providing] decades-long all-out support for these dictators.”
“Therefore, the nations of the region, through complete awareness, will neutralize their conspiracies,” he added.
As a case in point, Jalili said US backing up the former autocratic regime in Egypt ran counter to Washington’s alleged support for democratic standards.
