Caffeine may disturb women’s fertility

Caffeine may negatively affect the muscles in female reproductive system, causing delayed conception and infertility in some cases, a new study says.

University of Nevada researchers studied the effects of caffeine on the fallopian tubes of mice, which have a similar reproductive system as humans.

Caffeine relaxes the smooth muscle of the fallopian tubes, says the report published in the British Journal of Pharmacology.

"Caffeine inhibits the contractions of the muscles in the fallopian tube, so the egg stops getting transported," said lead researcher Sean Ward, adding that the condition would make women either have an unsuccessful pregnancy or become more prone to developing ectopic pregnancy, a potential high risk condition in which the embryo gets stuck and develops in the fallopian tube.

"Our experiments were conducted in mice, but this finding goes a long way towards explaining why drinking caffeinated drinks can reduce a woman’s chance of becoming pregnant," Ward added.

"This provides an intriguing explanation as to why women with high caffeine consumption often take longer to conceive than women who do not consume caffeine," the lead author noted.

"As well as potentially helping women who are finding it difficult to get pregnant, a better understanding of the way fallopian tubes work will help doctors treat pelvic inflammation and sexually transmitted disease more successfully," said Ward.

"It could also increase our understanding of what causes ectopic pregnancy, an extremely painful and potentially life-threatening situation in which embryos get stuck and start developing inside a woman’s fallopian tube."
