Iran, Armenia resolute to enhance ties

iranian president mahmoud ahmadinejad

Iranian lawmaker Robert Beglarian hails the country’s “positive” relations with Armenia, saying senior Iranian and Armenian officials have a political determination to develop ties in all fields.

He highlighted the importance of a scheduled official trip by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to Yerevan and said, “The visit will take place with regard to the significance that Iran attaches to regional security and the expansion of economic and cultural relations,” IRNA reported.

President Ahmadinejad is slated to travel to Armenia on Monday at the head of a high-ranking politico-economic delegation.

“Ahmadinejad’s official visit to Armenia is in line with developing and deepening relations between the two countries and in response to a trip to Iran by Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan (in late March),” the Iranian Embassy in Armenia announced on Sunday.

“During the day-long trip, Ahmadinejad will not only sit down for talks with the Armenian president but will also meet some of the country’s officials,” the announcement further reads.

Beglarian, who is also a member of Iran-Armenia Parliamentary Friendship Group, said the visit by the Iranian chief executive to Yerevan would provide “a very secure atmosphere of mutual confidence between the two countries.”

The Iranian legislator stated that Tehran and Yerevan have strengthened ties over recent years, particularly in the fields of energy and construction of infrastructures in Armenia.

He noted that construction of a hydro power plant on the border region between the two countries along the Aras River and building dams are among joint economic projects.
