Brisk walking improves prostate cancer

Brisk walking for at least three hours a week may reduce the risk of disease progression in patients diagnosed with early-stage of prostate cancer.

A 31-month follow up of 1,455 men with early-stage prostate cancer showed that survivors who walk at a pace of at least 4.8 kilometers per hour for three hours or more every week are at a 57 percent lower risk of experiencing a recurrence.

"It appears that men who walk briskly after their diagnosis may delay or even prevent progression of their disease," said lead author Erin Richman from the University of California, San Francisco.

"The benefit from walking truly depended on how quickly you walked. Walking at an easy pace did not seem to have any benefit," she added.

The finding urges men suffering from prostate cancer to get engaged in brisk walking in order to improve their prognosis, according to a report published in Cancer Research.

"Walking is something everyone can and should do to improve their health," Richman recommended.

Scientists believe exercising may prevent recurrence through changing the blood levels of certain proteins involved in triggering or boosting cancer growth.

While further researches are needed to confirm these findings, experts believe brisk walking can be considered as an easy and safe habit to improve lifestyle in prostate cancer sufferers.
