Iran blasts US over Egypt

iran’s parliament (majlis) speaker ali larijani

Iran’s Parliament (Majlis) Speaker Ali Larijani has criticized the policies of the Obama administration towards the recent revolution in Egypt.

"Americans have changed their stances several times in the past 20 days. First, they were doubtful to take a stance due to a lack of careful analysis," Larijani said in an interview with al-Alam new channel on Monday.

"When protests intensified, they criticized the Egyptian rulers and then they supported Hosni Mubarak based on their policies of ensuring personal gain, and when the protests intensified they [once again] turned to the people [and began supporting them]," he added.

Larijani’s remarks come after Mubarak was ousted on Friday after 30 years in power, handing over the reins of the government to the military.

Following Mubarak’s collapse, the Egyptian military, which assumed power, dissolved the parliament and suspended the constitution, saying it would stay in power for six months before a civilian government is elected.

"The Egyptian people should replace a democratic system after toppling the dictatorial government. The US cannot resist the power of the revolutionary people of the Middle East’s knowledge," Larijani added.

The Iranian official also said the Egyptian people have taken the first step in the victory of their revolution.

"It is naïve to think that the Egyptian revolution occurred and it will get a result very quickly," said Larijani.

"The ouster of a dictator is the first step in the victory of revolution because the purpose of revolution is changing the situation toward a democratic government, not replacing the dictator [with another one]," he added.
