Obesity linked to sense of smell

obesity linked to sense of smell

A new study suggests that people can smell food much better when they have finished a full meal and a greater sense of smell contributes to gaining weight.

According to the research published in the journal of Chemical Senses, overweight people- those with a higher body mass index or BMI - have a better sense of smell for food after finishing a meal compared to slim people.

"It could be speculated that for those with a propensity to gain weight, their higher sense of smell for food related odors might actually play a more active role in food intake,” the state-funded BBC quoted Dr. Lorenzo Stafford of the University of Portsmouth as saying.

"Hopefully this research will stimulate more work in this area with the potential to help those who struggle with their weight and those who treat people with weight problems."

Researchers also found that the body might detect and reject extra foods by sharpening the sense of smell after eating rather than when the person is hungry.

Dr. Stafford and his team believe that this keener sense of smell might compel the individual to carry on eating, even when they are full.
