Iranian artist receives top award of Sharjah biennial
Iranian artist Mostafa Aqamiri has received the gold medal of the 4th Sharjah Biennial for the Art of Arabic Calligraphy.
Having been unaware of his award, the artist received the gold medal, honorable mention, and several books bearing images of his displayed works via post in Tehran on Tuesday, he told Tehran Times Art and Culture Desk.
Organized by the Sharjah Calligraphy Museum, the exhibit took place from April 7 to June 7 in which 333 artists took part in the exhibition that showcased 821 artworks from 28 countries.
Aqamiri won the award for his illumination work named “Shamseh”. In the art of illumination and miniature, shamseh is named after the artwork bearing the image similar to the Sun. “Shahnameh”, “Mosque”, and “Eight Heavens” are some of his other creations that went on display at the biennial.

Yaqubian also competed with artists coming from 28 countries including Turkey, Germany, Canada, India, Egypt, Malaysia and Japan.
The Fourth Sharjah Biennial for the Art of Arabic Calligraphy 2010 acquainted visitors with many historical scripts related to Muslim cultures. The biennial was accompanied by several workshops and lectures on the art of calligraphy.
A graduate of handicrafts and Persian art, Aqamiri teaches at several universities and academies of art in Tehran and in other cities.
