High heel abstainers have stiffer tendons

Shifting from high heels to flat shoes is painful for women as those used to wear high heels have shorter calf muscle fibers, a new study says.

According to the study published in the Journal of Experimental Biology, frequent heel wearers have 13 percent shorter muscle fibers and subsequently thicker and stiffer tendons in the calf compared to those who commonly use flat shoes.

There was, however, in the size of the calf muscles of the heel wearers and those who wore flat shoes, the study found.

“If you wear high heels for two years or more, five times a week, muscle fibers will become shorter and tendons will thicken and stiffen,” said lead researcher Professor Marco Narici, stressing that the this causes discomfort when walking on flat feet because the tendon cannot stretch sufficiently.

Scientists therefore urged women avoid wearing heels or flat shoes all the time, stressing that they should wear a variety of heel heights in order to make calf muscles working through a wider range of movements.

"We want to give practical advice and I would recommend just doing a few stretching exercises to counteract some of these changes," Narici added.
