Centenarians are favored genetically
People who live to 100 and beyond are genetically distinct in a way that they can live 20 years longer than the normal population, a new study has revealed.
According to the research, a set of distinctive genes join together to overcome “disease causing genes” that could otherwise cause age relevant diseases, USA Today reported.
Researchers, however, warn that the carrier of these beneficial genes have to enjoy a healthy life and exercise in order to live longer.
According to the paper, over 1,000 centenarians, all Caucasians were studied and a cluster made of 150 indicators relevant to extreme old age was identified.
"We can predict with about 77% accuracy" the probability of a person living to 100, Thomas Perls, a professor of medicine at the Boston University School of Medicine and senior author, said on the paper.
It is well known that old age runs in families but this is the first time a study has proved a genetic correlation with it.
The study also indicated that some 23% of those living over 100 did not benefit from the gene cluster.
