Argentina 3 - 1 Mexico
Two-time champion Argentina has booked a World Cup quarter-final match with Germany after beating Mexico 3-1 at Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg.
Carlos Tevez scored twice, though television replays suggest he headed his 26th minute opener from a clear offside position after Lionel Messi chipped over Mexico keeper Oscar Perez.
Despite vociferous Mexican protests Italian referee Roberto Rosetti allowed the 26th-minute goal to remain on the score sheet.
Higuain then netted his fourth goal of the tournament for Maradona’s side in the 33rd minute after Mexican defender Ricardo Osorio miscued his pass straight to the striker. Higuain's goal put him top of the goal-scoring list.
A few minutes into the second half, Tevez finished any hopes for Mexico with a stunning hammer blast in the 52nd minute of the match.
Javier Hernandez pulled one back for Mexico with a 71st-minute consolation goal after a neat turn and powerful strike inside the area.
Argentina will meet Germany in the quarter-finals on Saturday in Cape Town.
Argentina, captained by its current coach Diego Maradona, beat West Germany to win the 1986 World Cup but finished runner-up to the same team four years later.
