Exercise negates gene-related obesity

Being involved in regular exercise can tackle an individual's genetic vulnerability to becoming obese in the long run, a new study has suggested.

According to the study published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, inheriting each copy of a gene variant known as fat mass-and-obesity-associated gene (FTO) is associated with about 1.50 kilograms increase in weight values.

Inheriting copies of the gene variant is linked with higher body mass index (BMI) as well as a higher percentage of body fat and a larger waist.

Daily physical activity for at least one hour can negate the influence of this gene on weight, lowering body fat mass and waist circumference, the study found.

‘These findings have important public health implications, and indicate that meeting the physical activity recommendations may offset the genetic predisposition to obesity associated with the FTO [gene variant] in adolescents,’ said lead researcher Jonatan R. Ruiz.
